Gradience Basics - SQL Issue/New installation or moving database to new Windows 7 computer

Install Gradience Basics in Windows 7/Server 2008 

 1. Click here to download and install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (55.4MB file)

(no changes need to be made during install, just select defaults)  or see our walkthrough article on installing SQL Express

 2. Click here to download and install the appropriate Gradience Basics title that you own.

Backup and Restore

Option A

1. Backup data from the computer that used Gradience Basics by clicking Data > Backup

2. Copy the backup file from the old computer to the new computer. The backup file can be found in C:\Program Files\Gradience Basics\Data Backup on Windows XP or C:\Program Files (x86)\Gradience Basics\Data Backup in Windows 7

3. Copy the backup file from the old computer and paste it on the to the new computer at: C:\Program Files\Gradience Basics\Data Backup on Windows XP or place it at C:\Program Files (x86)\Gradience Basics\Data Backup in Windows 7

4. Open Gradience Basics on the new computer and click Skip at the license registration screen.

5. Click Data > Restore - select the backup file and click the Restore button. The backup file needs to be in the above listed directory or the program will not restore the database and you will recieve an error message.

Option B

 Copy your data from the old computer and paste it into the new one.

1. Open the old computer and go to C:\Program Files \ Microsoft SQL Server \ MSSQL.1\ MSSQL \ Data

The two files that constitute the database are:

  • GRADIENCEBASICS.mdf

  • GRADIENCEBASICS_Log.LDF

2. On the new computer: Navigate to Services in Windows. Stop the instance named SQL Server (SQL Express).

3. Paste the copied files from step 1 above on the new computer at C:\Program Files \ Microsoft SQL Server \ MSSQL.1\ MSSQL \ Data.

4.  On the new computer: Navigate to Services in Windows. Start the instance named SQL Server (SQL Express).

Note: If using Windows 7-64bit the folder is in C:\Program Files (x86) \ Microsoft SQL Server \ MSSQL.1\ MSSQL \ Data

 If an unhandled exception occurs when attempting to open the program:

Right-click the Gradience Basics shortcut on the desktop. Click Properties > Compatibility. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for: > Windows XP.
